for every door

Houses in Fenwick collect locks over the years: a front door from one decade, a side entry from another, a garage door that takes its own key. We rekey them all to a single key so the ring in your pocket finally gets lighter, and set up a spare that lives somewhere sensible. We also come out to Winger, Chantler, Becketts Bridge, Chambers Corners, Forks Road, Perry and Boyle.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 47 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 47% of homes in Pelham were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In an area of varied housing ages, rekeying is the one job that fits every door. Old cylinders and new ones both take fresh pins, so a household moving into either kind of home can start with keys that nobody else holds.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 83% of homes in Pelham (2021 Census).Where homes are mostly detached, patio and sliding doors deserve attention alongside the hinged ones. Auxiliary locks, pin locks and better latches for sliders are routine additions that a locksmith brings on the same visit as the front door work.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

Every high security installation ends with a walk-through: how the new key feels, how the bolt seats, where the keys are numbered, who is on the authorisation list. You should leave knowing exactly what was fitted and how to manage it.

    High Security Locks

After the attempted break-in the police officer pointed at your door and said the strike plate was held by two short screws. Nobody got in, but you have looked at that door differently every evening since.

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Someone tried the back door while you were away. The jamb is splintered around the strike, the bolt is bent, and the knob turns with a grinding feel.

    Deadbolt Installation

The front door has a handsome lever and a keyed knob, and that is all. Nothing above it.

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

Police have come and gone, the occurrence number is on a sticky note, and you are standing in a cold hallway looking at a splintered frame, wondering how the house gets locked before everyone tries to sleep.

Good questions about locks

How long does a whole-house rekey take?

Plan on an hour or two for a typical house with three or four cylinders, including the walk-through, identification, pinning, cutting and testing. Each additional cylinder adds a little, as does swapping a cylinder to bring a mismatched door onto the same key, resetting a homeowner-rekeyable lock or clearing a garage opener. The locksmith gives a realistic window on the phone once the list of doors is known.

Will my door hardware look any different afterwards?

No. The work happens inside the cylinder, so the bolt, handle, finish and strike plate stay exactly as they are, and nothing new is cut into the door. The only visible change is the key in your hand. If a cylinder does have to be replaced, because its keyway is incompatible with the others or it has worn out, the locksmith picks one in a matching finish so the door keeps a consistent look.

Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?

Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead.

The house came with a smart lock. Can you make it mine?

Yes, and it is treated as a fresh installation rather than a hand-me-down. The lock is reset to factory settings using the maker's procedure, which wipes codes, schedules and paired phones, then enrolled to an account you create. Anything else that could open it, such as a hub or a voice assistant, gets its own check, because those permissions sit outside the lock. The override cylinder is rekeyed, batteries replaced and firmware updated. If the hardware is worn, replacing it is the cleaner choice.
