Good questions about locks

Lockout Services
What is the difference between rekeying and replacing a lock?
Rekeying keeps the lock you have and changes only the pins inside the cylinder so a new key operates it and the old one no longer does. It suits hardware that is in good shape and simply needs a fresh key. Replacing swaps the whole lock or cylinder for new hardware, which makes sense when the existing lock is worn, damaged, of low grade, or when you want a different style or a keypad. Either can be done during a lockout visit. Home Lockout Service
How long does a business lockout take?
It depends on the hardware and what else is wired to it. A standard storefront cylinder or office lever on a well-hung door is often a short job once authority is confirmed. A high-security cylinder, a frozen lock, a dropped door or a dead access controller adds time, and so does rekeying several doors afterwards. The locksmith gives you a realistic idea on the phone once you describe the door and the situation. Business Lockout Service
What proof do I need to show?
Photo identification and something that connects you to the lock. For a house or apartment that is a lease, a bill, addressed post, or confirmation from the property manager; for a business, your role there; for a vehicle, the registration or ownership papers with matching identification. If the documents are inside, say so on the phone and the check is completed once the door is open. Broken Key Extraction
Is the lock that was forced still usable?
Sometimes, and the locksmith tests it honestly. A deadbolt that stayed thrown while the frame gave way may be undamaged, though a kick can bend the bolt where it crossed the gap or crack the housing. A cylinder that was twisted, drilled or punched is finished. Reused hardware must operate as smoothly as new with the door open and closed; if it hesitates, it is replaced, because a lock that took a blow tends to fail at the worst moment. Change or Rekey Locks
Will my door hardware look any different afterwards?
No. The work happens inside the cylinder, so the bolt, handle, finish and strike plate stay exactly as they are, and nothing new is cut into the door. The only visible change is the key in your hand. If a cylinder does have to be replaced, because its keyway is incompatible with the others or it has worn out, the locksmith picks one in a matching finish so the door keeps a consistent look. Lock Rekeying
What should I have ready before the locksmith arrives?
Know which doors you want bolted, what they are made of, and whether each already has a deadbolt or only a knob. A photo of the door face and edge helps. Have any existing keys to hand, decide whether you want everything on one key, and mention glass near the lock, a storm door in the same opening, or a rental agreement. If you have already bought hardware, keep the box and template together. Deadbolt Installation
Is it possible to upgrade just the exterior locks now and handle interior doors later?
Yes, and it is a common way to spread the work out. Exterior doors carry the security load, so starting there with a graded deadbolt and a reinforced strike covers the part that matters most first. Interior locks, passage sets, privacy locks on bathrooms and bedrooms, can be scheduled for a later visit without affecting anything already done, and the locksmith can note what was fitted so the second visit matches it. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Can a modern cylinder be fitted to my old mortise lock?
Often, on cases that already take a threaded cylinder. Mortise cylinders are made in standard thread sizes and lengths with different cam shapes, and a new one is selected to match the case and the door thickness. That gives you keys cut on a machine and the option of keying the door alike with the rest of the house. A bit-key case has no cylinder to swap; its keys are made on the bench instead. High Security Locks
What if my safe is bolted to the floor or built into a wall?
The opening and combination work proceed the same way regardless of how the safe is mounted; access to the lock face, dial or keypad is what matters, not whether the case itself can be moved. A built-in or bolted safe simply means the locksmith works around its fixed position rather than moving it to a more convenient spot. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Why does the inside of my fireproof safe feel damp?
A fire-rated interior works by sealing tightly, and that same seal traps ordinary household humidity over time with nowhere to go. Opening the door for a few hours every few weeks lets trapped air exchange with the room, and a desiccant packet inside absorbs moisture between those openings if it is refreshed on schedule. A musty smell or a soft-feeling document is the interior telling you it needs airing out. Safe Installation & Servicing
Do high security locks need special maintenance?
Only light care. Use the dry lubricant the locksmith recommends once or twice a year, never oil, which gathers grit around the finger pins and sidebar. Keep the keyway free of debris and insert the key fully before turning. In winter, warm a resisting key in your hand or use a de-icer rather than forcing it. Check hinge and strike screws each season so the door stays aligned. Treated this way the cylinder lasts for decades. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
How many keys should we have cut?
Count the people who need each group, add one spare per group for the safe, and stop there. Extra keys cut 'just in case' are the ones that end up unaccounted for. Because the keys are cut to code from the pinning records, more can be produced later to the same standard, so there is no need to stockpile on the day. Restricted keys are ordered by the named signatories when needed. Commercial Rekeying
What should I have ready before the assessment visit?
A rough list of who currently has access to which doors, any existing keys or cylinders you can point to, and a sense of upcoming changes such as new hires, a department split, or a unit due to open. None of this needs to be exact; the assessment is partly built around confirming or correcting whatever the business already assumes about its own access. Master Key System Design
Can a landlord and several tenants share one system?
Yes. In a multi-tenant building, a shared entrance can run on the landlord's controller while each tenant's suite runs its own credentials, so a tenant's staff can reach their own space without gaining access to another business's door. The property manager and each tenant work out together which doors belong on which list before the system is programmed. Access Control Installation
How is occupant load actually counted for this decision?
Occupant load is calculated from the floor area and the intended use of the room, using published factors for that occupancy type, rather than a headcount taken on a busy night. A building official or a locksmith familiar with the calculation can work through it for a specific room, and the result is what decides whether the exit doors serving that room need a releasing device. Car Keys
There is a dog inside and the car is getting hot. Who do I call?
Call 911, and the provincial animal protection line if you cannot reach the owner; the province asks the public to report animals left in hot or cold vehicles rather than break glass themselves. Police and animal welfare inspectors have authority to enter a vehicle for an animal in distress. A locksmith can attend as well, and if you are the owner, the same careful opening gets you and the dog reunited with the car undamaged. Car Lockout Service
Which documents count as proof of ownership?
Government photo identification plus the vehicle permit issued by ServiceOntario, the green ownership showing the VIN, is the usual pair. An insurance slip or a lease agreement in your name also works. For a company vehicle, a work order or letter from the fleet manager naming the VIN covers it. If you bought the car days ago, bring the bill of sale and the signed permit until the transfer is done. Car Key Replacement
Should I get the locks rekeyed when I get a spare, or is that a different service?
They are related but not identical, since a car's door and ignition locks are a separate mechanical layer from the immobilizer even though both systems usually get touched in the same visit. Making a spare and removing a genuinely unaccounted-for key's electronic access are handled together, and if that lost key's blade could still turn a matching door cylinder by hand, the locksmith rekeys that cylinder as part of the same appointment. Spare Car Key Duplication
Do I need to bring my car anywhere, or does the work happen where it is?
The vehicle generally stays where it is parked, since the equipment used for programming travels to it rather than the other way around. What matters more than the location is that the vehicle itself is present for the visit, since most procedures read information directly from the car as part of registering the new fob.
